DVD-ROMs won't play sound

I have an internal DVD/CDRW drive and an external DVD-RW/CDRW drive, neither of which will play audio from DVDs all of a sudden. They both show the picture. These DVDs were previously playing sound on these drives. My computer still plays music and other sounds, and .avi files on my computer still play audio. The DVDs play everything on standalone DVD players. So it's just the DVD drives. What could be the problem, and how can I fix it?
