I just bought a used Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM. XP seemed to have a driver for it, but now I am wondering it is any good. I went to Pioneer's website, and found it difficult to install their driver. The setup program said, "error drive is not ready" when you press enter it closes.

Anyway, my DVD-ROM will play DVDs with PowerDVD nicely. Media Player, just video, no sound.

However, my DVD-ROM will NOT play CD-ROMS. This is very irritating. When I put them in, the green busy light doesn't even flash. For DVDs it does. I was guarnteed a non DOA, so if this is faulty, I can get it replaced. But before I complain, I wanted to run it by the folks here. The drive is set to master, and registers as Drive D:

Thanks for any help that comes along

Did they claim it would play CDs as well as DVDs?

Yes they did. Well, this is how they said it does:

"16x DVD-ROM read speed"
"40x CD-ROM read speed"

NON DOA GUARNTEE!

It's an ebay auction. He has 99% postive feedback. I am confident he'll be cooperative. But it's just a hassle if it is in fact dead, and I have to pay out of my pocket shipping charges, and another 4-5 day wait. By the time I pay shipping charges again, I could have got the 24x. Bleh.

If you're not getting audio, you may have forgotten to hook up your analog audio cable. Open up your case and make sure you plugged the 4-pin audio cable into the DVD-ROM drive at one end and into your soundcard (or MB) CD-Audio-in port on the other end. I'm not sure how much you paid for this, but I'd maybe write it off as a loss if that doesn't work. www.tcwo.com is a great computer parts warehouse where you can get tons of stuff at wholesale prices. I've used them a lot and love them! My guess is that since you get video playback, he won't call it a DOA. You can always check. Hope you can get it fixed!

I e-mailed him, and he's fine with a replacement. It was $15 + $15 shipping. I am hoping he overcharged me for the shipping, cuz I sure don't wanna spend $15 to ship it back. But I will regardless, because unfortunately, it's a much better deal than getting another one.

Thanks guys (and or girls)
