I have a dvd-rom that does nothing at all when a disc is placed inside, "please insert disk into drive". when i put a cd in it just freezes for a minute then gives me that message. it is a HL-DT-ST GDR8161B and came with an hp computer and a cd burner. i rarley used it but one day it was just non-responsive. Its been awhile now and i still cannot resolve this issue. It has nothing to do with it being on the same ide cable as another disk drive does the same thign on the hdd, i've tried updating firmware(might not be right version though, sicne it didnt work), and ive reinstalled windows xp a few different occasions. The device manager says its workign fine and it IS reconized as a DVD drive not cd rom. It is also seen in the bios as the correct model number. I am basically clueless ive tried everything i can think of plus more, can it just be dead, i mean i never used it at all.

It can just be dead.

You can get a 16x DVD burner for 30-40 dollars.

The laser lens could be dirty or the drive is hosed.

Does the light come or even try to spin?

Does it work from a DOS mode?

no it does not work in dos. i bought a lens cleaner disk, but could not use it because it wont play the disc, hence not clean the laser. and yes the light does come on.
