Subject: Dvd-Rom Drive not readingOS: Winxp ProCPU/Ram: 2048mbModel/Manufacturer: Compaq Custom |
Comment: I have been having a great issues lately with my Dvd-Rom Drive. I have been getting a error saying "Window cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows." The thing is its not reading any of the cd's and dvd's that i burned with it couple weeks ago and not reading any that i bought at stores. I talked with Compaq's support they told me to uninstall and install the driver for the rom and i did and i also uninstalled the IDE Controller for it but still same effect. I just have one theory and its that the IDE Controller is failing and was wondering if there is a way to test that theory with a program? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Reply: (edit)as for testing with a program, I do not believe that there is a way to check. One thing you could try checking is if you have a windows cd you could put it in the drive and on startup it will either read the cd or not and if it doesn't then it may be the IDE cable or the DVD rom drive it's self. I would try a new IDE ribbon cable also. NovakAntec 900 Gaming Case Xinfinity SLI 500W PSU EvGA Nvidia 680i SLI Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Cosair 2 x 1GB DDR2800 EvGA Nvidia 7900GT 2 Seagate 320GB Sata

Reply: (edit)Try using a laser lens cleaning CD in the drive. If that doesn't help and you haven't touched the data cable connected to the drive since it last worked properly, the most probable cause, if you have been using this drive for a long while, is the bearings in the drive motor in the optical drive have deteriorated to the point they are producing too much friction and the motor can no longer spin reliably, or much less likely there is something else wrong with the drive, such as a defective laser lens circuit, and the drive must be replaced.
