Probably neither one. They will probably both be obsolete. There are new CD/DVD drives coming soon with incredibly large capacities.

If they're CD/DVD drives, what do they burn? GDroms? Sorry to say it, but DVD's are here to stay for quite a long time. I'm just wondering which one and what the differences are :)

The difference has something to do with the way the data is written on the DVD. It's just anpther standard so that they use another code like for example VHS and Beta in the first videorecorders.

Which on will be around in 5 years:
I fear not even the experts can answer that. This will be decided by the customers who buy the devices. If all start to buy -R then +R will vanish and the other way around.
It was the same with VHS and Beta (and some others) with the videorecorders. VHS became the common standard while Beta was quite a bit better in quality as far as I remember!

Was watching TechTv awhile back and someone asked the same question. They researched and found the difference to be one of compatibilty. Which one will work on the highest number of DVD players? Turns out the DVD -R was the most compatible. Today. What we will see in a year or two or five remains to be seen. The DVD -R was also the fastest. From the standpoint of buying media, which still isn't all that cheap, I'd go with the -R. They are working on new specs that will vastly increase the capacity of DVD. When they first came out there was talk of DVD's with hundreds of Gb capacity. We are still waiting for that, tho. HTH

From what I've read, if you have a device more than a year old, it's likely -. If you have a newer device it's likely +.

I've been looking at this too, and I figure if I'm going to blow a wad of cash on a burner, I may as well spend a little more and get the ability to do both formats.

Found a NEC +/- Drive new with roxio software for $140 shipped, so I guess I won't have to worry about it after all, now I just have to sell the DVD+R drive that I haven't even gotten yet, lol.

About capacity:
They are able to put about 19GB on one DVD but the problem is they need both sides and two layers on every side to do that. There's no burner to do that at the moment!
