I have the Plextor PX-716A. I need some dual layer media that will be the most compatible with top set DVD players. I'm not sure if I should buy some DVD-R DL or DVD+R DL and which brand I should get. It seems most people like Verbatim and some like Ritek. In the past I've always used DVD-R single layer media but now I have to choose which format for Dual Layer. I know you can change the book type for compatibility with some players.

Verbatim is made by Ritek lately, along with CMC (and others) producing Verbatim.

These days it doesn't make much a difference if you use -R or +R.

It used to be that you had to choose the one that your DVD drive manufacturer stated, but pretty well all machines will burn and play both discs equally well.

You should however do a little testing with your Home DVD player (if you plan on using it to watch movies). Home DVD players tend to be quite finnicky, and each one accepts home burned discs at different levels, even with a proper book setting.

Yes it is the home DVD player that concerns me the most. I know my Plextor drive is compatible with everything these days. Since Dual Layer is relatively new, I would imagine that my top set player (which came out before the days of dual layer recordable) and many other home players would have issues with certain dual layer media.

Check the manual for the home DVD player. My Sony shows DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD+R DL but does not show DVD-R DL.
