Hi.
I would like to know the actuall size of a DVD-+R... Nero has a limit at 4.5GB so is the size 4.7GB or 4.5GB? Can I write 4.7GB of data on to DVDr or not? Also which 4x media writes at 4x (15 min)on your drive (is it a sony?)?

I don't have a +R disc here but a +RW. It's capacity on the cover is 4,7GB but with Nero it also says 4483MB.
It's the same as with all those newer harddrives out there - they just divided by 1000 instead of 1024.
If you calculate with 1024 as the computer does this makes 4483MB x1024 = 4590592kb x1024 = 4700766208byte.
There you have your 4,7GB as long as you divide by 1000 !!!

I just checked a +r and I agree with Free Weasel.
$ dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/dvd

READ DISC INFORMATION:
Disc status: blank
Number of Sessions: 1
State of Last Session: empty
Number of Tracks: 1
READ TRACK INFORMATION[#1]:
Track State: blank
Track Start Address: 0*2KB
Next Writable Address: 0*2KB
Free Blocks: 2295104*2KB
Track Size: 2295104*2KB
Some calculations based on the above media information:2295104*2 = 4590208KB = 4482.625MB
4482.625 * (2^20 / 10^6) = 4700.372992"MB"

It's not just the DVD people doing this. I just installed an 80GB WD HD yesterday. Only its not 80GB.

Your 80 shows up as a 74.5 right?
I have the same thing, Free weasle was right.
80023715840 Bytes Devide it by 1000 4 times and you end up with 80 as in 80GB but devide it by 1024 and you end up with 74.5***
