What is good and safe way to clean fingerprints and other dirt from DVD-discs?

Are those repair kits any good? http://www.clearoutworld.ca/LCD6-F9...

Repair kits are primarily used to lessen the affect scratches have on the ability to read the disk. If actual dirt is present you can use a mild cleaner like dish soap. Rinse well. For finger prints I just use a soft clean rag. Old athletic socks turned inside out work great. If the DVD is copyable then burn a copy before using and use the copy to view/ install. That way you know if the copy is good. I always do that with CD media.

I've got a drawful of old & smelly athletic socks. I guess I will start a business selling them as "Miracle CD Wiper" LOL

Hey XP, you are too late. I have already patented the new use. BTW you didn't respond to my question about AV reviews.

I think you are worried too much about damaging the surface of the disk. CD/DVD media is pretty sturdy. Just don't use anything abrasive or anything that leaves any residue.

You do understand that the data isn't actually written to the surface? The aluminium surface UNDER the clear plastic is where the data is written. Scratches and/or fingerprints can diffuse or block the laser light from penetrating properly. That is the reason to clean. CDs are not written in linear fashion and have a built-in error check to allow for minor damage to the clear surface.

I can't remember which thread or else I would find it. I thought it was you that posted a link to some offical group that tested AV programs that were submitted. Can't recall any more details. Meant to bookmark the link but didn't. Don't worry about it. May not have even been you.

As far as forgetting. You, as I do, respond to alot of threads each week. This may have been a couple of weeks ago. Oh well. It is just that this test organization did things using some sort of test and applied to all suites the same. Seemed to be unbiased, unlike many reviews found on the web.
