I have waded about the computing.net forums but not found anything right on the money, so hoping someone can help.

I recently installed a new 120Gb IBM Deskstar hard drive to replace my old 30Gb drive. Then I re-installed Win98SE instead of ME (which gave me nothing but pain).
BUT... now my Toshiba SD-r1002 DVD-ROM/CDRW combo drive won't work properly, in that it will read CDRs and CDRW but neither Nero (version 5.5.10.0) or Adaptec EasyCD (v3.5c/Direct CD 2.5?) can write anything.
Nero gives error messages about EndTrack failing - EasyCD cannot detect writable media.
Prior to re-configuring system both programs worked with this combo drive. I have tried the following:

- Switching on and off DMA checkbox and re-booting
- removing combo drive, deleting drivers and allowing system to refind on reboot
- updating Toshiba firmware (successfully flashed to the latest version available at firmware-flash.com)
- changing IDE positions and replacing cables

I found one reference on the forums to manually altering part of an .inf file, but as the drive actually shipped with the PC this would seem an unlikely solution (but I'm guessing). Other changes to the original purchased system don't intuitively strike me as potential issues, but just in case they may have any bearing they are:
-RAM is now at mobo's max capacity of 768
-PCI network card
-second PCI vga card (for 2nd monitor)
-SCSI card for scanner
-original 30Gb drive is now a slave
-2nd CD-ROM drive

There are no pesky little yellow exclamation marks anywhere (must be a first for me) and all other devices function normally but I am completely at a loss.

Hope somebody out there is way geekier than me and can free from this purgatory!

Many thanks in advance,
Adrian

Some progress has been made! Removed EasyCD and Nero, then reinstalled only Nero. Now that the new firmware 'got there first' (?maybe?) Nero sees and writes to the drive _BUT_ it won't recognize CDRWs that are 10x at all, only my older Traxdata CDs. Is this normal? It will write to these older ones at 4x but still seems slower than it used to be. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
