A few months ago my cd rom stopped recognizing cds. It will still play dvds and I assume burn them as well. (I haven't tried yet as I don't have any blank dvds handy) It will not recognize any kind of cd, including blank cds to burn to. Cds will not autoplay, nor can I open them manually without locking up the computer. Sometimes it locks up and I have to restart, sometimes it does for awhile (few minutes) then shows the contents of the drive to be empty. I have had DELL look at it and they found nothing wrong. I tried rolling back the drivers thinking a new program caused the problem, but there are no drivers to roll back to. Hopefully someone on here has some ideas b/c I'm tapped out. Thanks.

A combination drive uses at least two lasers. Your laser for CDs is probably dead. If this is a desktop computer you can buy a new drive for $30/40 dollars. Sometimes even less on sale.

Its a laptop that's barely a year old. Considering I took it to Dell when the warranty was still valid and they couldn't figure it out, I certianly hope its not that. Thanks.
