hi does anyone hav any ideas whats going on? a mate of mine has a dvd-rom/cdrw drive. when he puts a cd in the drive detects the cd/dvd, original or copy and the drive icon on windows xp changes from cd-r to dvd-rom depending on which he puts in the drive, but when he clicks on the drive to explore the disk it says the disc is blank. iv checked that all the cables and leads connected to teh drive r connected to teh board and drive correctly but it just doesnt make much sense as to why it wont work.
does anyone know why? is his laser on the way out?

Sounds like a problem with the drive hardware but to be sure try another ide cable and power connector and remove the drive from contral panel/system and reboot. Windows should find the drive and reinstall it.
If that doesn't help I fear it time to check the warranty!
