I have this laptop(Sony Vaio) w/XP w/ SP2 and the CD/DVD drive will not read Cds. the little disk shows with the arror and the light comes on the drive but the disk does not show up in my computer or open. Ihave checked the AUto play function and thatis set at default, when I click the drive it says cannot read from disk. it may not be compatable with windows. However, when I put a DVD in the drive it plays just fine. Any ideas. I saw this quite a while ago and have forgotten the outcome of it .I guess we don't learn if we can't remember. thanks for any help

Hmm that is a strange one
first i would run windows update make sure you have all the updates from the web page
Second i would go to the web page to sony web page and download all the latest drivers from them
do that and then post back and we will go from there

Heres's what I did. It is a sony Vaio but the drive is a toshiba CD-2505 so I went to toshiba. long story short generic drivers no help so I went to the device manager and tried to update the drivers to no avail.Current drivers are the best. so I went to the drive's properties and there were several tabs so I checked them and one was volume. It was blank so I clicked populate and it filled itself in and after that the device worked fine. Well on reflection and going back to volume in the device manager it was blank again and the disk still played so I thought I didn't check it after I attempted to update the drivers. Durn!! my old science background and I didnt check one thing at a time. Well anyway it appears to play original and burned Cds as well as the DVDs so I am saved$50.00 to buy a new one thanks for getting me going on it again.
Madmaven.
