Ok, I'm not sure what my issue is really, but basically I think my laptop is only reconising my NEC DVD+-RW ND-6500A as a cd-rom, and it wont seem to burn dvd's for me, whenever i run Nero Vision Express to make a dvd, and it goes through the three hours of encoding, when it comes to the buring process, it tells me I have to insert a disc with more space.

But Nero has told me that the particular movie I have been making only takes up 3.58gb of space, and the dvds i've been puttin in have 4.7gb free.

Can anyone suggest something for me? I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue, but let me know please!!!!

I have a Tosh with Nero so can I suggest the following?
1 Go to Nero and run TOOLKIT. This gives a really handy little table that tells you precisely what Nero thinks your drive can handle.
2. When you run Nero, it has a drop down, CD, DVD, & CD/DVD. Now I know Mero is supposed to be able to tell what you have inserted but I always TELL Nero which media I am using & I have never has a problem.
3. I recently updated my Nero and the downloads were over 50Mb ! so give that a try if you have broadband. Best to fire it off Nero itself.

HTH,

i would try burning a few small simple files on to a dvd disc and see if that works. If it does then it most likely is not a hardware fault.

If your movie file is 3.58gb on the hard drive it might (probably will) increase in size a whole lot when it is converted to the DVD format.

It would be a good idea to follow Cliffpage's advice.

Eily:

Are you using DVD media rated at 8x or slower? I have the exact same DVD burner in a laptop. It is rated to a max writespeed of 8x. Even after the latest bios upgrade (for the burner) I have never been able to get it to write properly to media rated faster than 8x (yes, for the faster media I have manually set the burn speed slower.) I have tried 16x media forcing write speeds of 8x and also 4x and I have not got a successfull burn. Whenever I use media rated 8x or slower, it burns DVDs fine.

Ok I burnt a smaller file to a dvd and that went through fine, but it refuses to burn a larger file, saying there is not enough space,

But it says on nero 'used disc space 3.58gb' not used hard drive space.

I'm using dvds that are definitely blank.

I tried putting in a dual layer dvd, and when that tried to burn it said it was aborted and gave me an error log file, should I paste that here?

I'm not sure about the speed of the drive vs the speed of the media, because it burned fine for a file that was about 2gb big.

Its so annoying!!

Any more suggestions?

If it was me, I would contact Nero tech support.
