DVD Writer writes at fixed speed

Specs: Windows 7 32 bit, C2D E7200@2.53GHz 2GBDDR2 Transcend 667Mhz
I have an HP dvd1035 drive. Quite some time back it would write only at 6x. Then after a point, like 7-8 months ago, it wouldnt write at anything else but 2.4x. I used ImgBurn, it would write at 2.4x even if I selected something else. Now, sometime back, i installed windows 7. Ever since, it writes only at 6x. Can anyone tell me why and if there's a way to fix it?
I gave an iso i had to friend to see if his drive could write it as he had written at 2.4x, but his had a similar problem- his stayed fixed at 4x. Does it have anything to do with the iso or something? like it has a fixed write speed? Or do I have to change my drive?

Try and see if a different (better) quality of disc will improve the write speed (though it sounds like 6X may be your max)
