DVD writer won't write DVDs

I have a Liteon DVDRW SOHW-812S connected to my PC. It reads DVDs and CDs, and it will burn CDs.However it absolutely refuses to burn DVDs. This drive is supposedly compatible with +R/-R and +RW/-RW, I have tried to use -RW and +R. I have tried just transfering files to the burner and it says the media is full or write protected, when I have used 1 click DVD writer on it, it has told me a number of things. That there is incorrect media in the drive, that I don't have a DVD writer and even shut the computer down for its own safety. Am I short of a driver? Windows says all is well but it would wouldn't it! Hope someone out there can help.

updating the firmware may help, seems the factorys are behind what the firmware teams are producing.

Brilliant! Seems to be ok so far, have transfered a file to it and that worked. I thought you have to flash things like DVD writers in real DOS or am I way behind the times? I was looking at making it region free but in the end decided that finding a computer running windows '98, plugging the drive in and getting down and dirty in DOS was far to much grief. Thanks for your help, dude!
