Try using a straightened paperclip inserted in the tiny hole below the tray to get the tray open. Usually the motor is the last thing to break on an optical drive. If the tray is stuck for some reason, opening it manually MAY fix things. I had a CDrom that acted the same way just last week. That CD drive hadn't been used in some time. After opening the tray manually the drive was then fine.

thankyou all, well guess what the drive started working on its own.. i have had a similar problem, the drive would not play dvds but i was able to eject it then, but then it would work after a restart or 2 .. but that day i booted it several times & even turned the pc off but it still kept giving me the same error.. any idea why?

The mechanism inside that operates the tray is all plastic. The motor may be getting weak and the plastic parts have worn. You could try rubbing a little petroleum jelly on the edges of the tray when extended. Look underneath the tray for a gear rack and lube it lightly. If that doesn't work, burners are pretty cheap nowadays.

thanks for replying but I had the problem since I purchased the burner .. my bad I didn't get it replaced.. but since I had it since I bought it maybe we can eliminate physical faults such as the motor, but thats my thought, maybe I'll get it replaced
