When I put a blank dvd into the dvd writer it wants to read it as a cd. The dvd will read a dvd and in the past I've had no trouble writing to a dvd (same brand i"m trying to write to now).I've uninstalled the driver and reinstalled the driver but no luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am very familiar with that quirk. My systems do that occasionally, and then the quirk goes away. When it does it, the system recognizes the blank dvd as a CD with one audio track. Other people have complained about this quirk also. I spent a lot of time investigating the problem and I finally came to the conclusion that it's an intermittent windows bug.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Thanks for the suggestions. I found the problem. I use Nero to burn dvds and cds It has an options list for choosing either a dvd or a cd. I had the option set for cd rather than dvd- DUH!
