DVD R/RW Drive thinks all disks are blank...

No matter what disk i put into my disk drive, it comes up in My Computer as a blank disk. When i put the disk in a small disk flashes beside my cursor for about 3 seconds and disappears. The green light beside the disk drive, also flashes for about 3 seconds. I also bought a disk yesterday, and it doesn't even recognize that brand new disk. As far as i can tell, nothing was installed at the time this began happening. So i have no idea what is causing it & what to do...
