DVD ROM not working

I have a packard bell laptop my dvd rom suddenly stopped working ..whenever i try to play a dvd it doesnt work and nothing happens ..it only happens with dvd's..i have a mats---a dvd-rom sr-8176 and i found the right driver for it online but whenever i try to set it up i get the message asking me to check my OS which is normaly 95/98 but i have xp installed ..im so tired of this problem ive tried everything still no luck..note that i am using power dvd v4 and 5 none works.. i also tried to run playdvd.exe and still nothing happens..i read all the forum related topics and im goin nuts..plz help..thnx

Does it play cd roms ok?
Or does it just not install period?
If cd works. The DVD laser is shot. DVD roms have two lasers, one for reading cd's, a different type for reading dvds. I have had dvd roms that would not read dvd's and would read cd's perfectly because of this failure.
Post back, maybe we can get this sorted.

thank u for replying bck..it seems that u r right coz it is playing cds and cd roms perfectly my only problem is with the dvd play back..so what to do now?!
