I had my computer custom made a few weeks ago, I had a dvd rom and a dvd burner put in. today I tried to copy a dvd, and I got some kind of error saying that both my dvds were on the same IDE controller. I also have 2 hard drives, I'm guessing they are on the same IDE too. How would I fix this problem? switch one of the dvds with one of the hard drives IDE? if so, how would I go about doing that? just switch the cables? would I have to make any changes to XP or will it automaticly detect the change?

Leave it as is -- I suppose both are connected to Secondary IDE cable. Control only that one is switched as master (DVDwriter) and the second one (DVD-ROM) as Slave. You should also put the DMA ON for both drives, if it is not already ON in System Settings... Hi!

DVD-ROM & DVD burner should not be on the same channel...open your case & change the configuration, or take it back & tell them to change it for you. This is what you want:
Primary master = HDD w/operating system
Primary slave = DVD-ROM
Secondary master = DVD burner
Secondary slave = 2nd HDDIf you do it yourself, you may have to physically rearrange the drives so that the cables will reach. Make sure to change the master/slave jumpers on the back of the drives (if necessary)...don't use the cable select setting. If the cable used on the secondary channel is currently a 40-wire IDE cable, you'll have to replace that with an 80-wire cable so the 2nd HDD can run at full speed. Max speed with a 40-wire cable is ATA33...that's OK for optical drives, but not modern hard drives

Yes, agreed. This is preferred installation. Tell your "builder" to redo it properly.
He may give you crap about putting opticals and hard disks on the same channel but he obviously hasn't tried it with two high speed opticals like dvd roms and dvd burners. They simply won't talk to each other on the same channel.

Thanks for the info guys! When I switch the hardware, do I have to make any system changes, or will the comp recognize the change by itself?
Also I was looking at the setup of my old 98SE computer, I had the same setup, 2 hard drives on the same IDE, and a cd burner and a dvd rom on the 2nd, I never once ran into a problem copying cd's, and I did it direct everytime. Why would it work on my old comp, but not my new one?

It should autodetect everything fine. But you never know with windows they say =)
It comes down to timing issues, and your old comp is slower hence not as fussy.
Glad to here you got it.
