i just bought a new lap top and i need to make a back up disc, can you tell me if the dvd discs i need to buy are plus or minus discs, or does it make any difference

Virtually all newer DVD writers will handle DVD+R or DVD-R. Some can, however, be a little "finicky" about writing to cheap media (I've never had any problems with Philips or TDK, but your mileage may vary), so stay with a well-regarded brand and keep media stored properly:
