my friend asked me to upgrade his cd drives as his old dvd/cdr was not working. i have installed a LITE-ON 16x DVDRW as the master and a LG 16X DVD ROM as the slave. I can read discs from the LG device and I am able to burn CDs on the LITEON device. The problems I am getting is that I am unable to read cds in the DVDRW drive. this happens if i try to access the drive from My Computer or windows explorer. Every time i try and read from this drive the application hangs and i have to force the application to shut down. My friends PC is an Evesham model(no sure of exact details) . I have also recently upgraded his OS from winme. Does anyone know what may be causing this???

Don't know if this has anything to do with it, but if you burn on the fly, the DVD-ROM should be setup as the primary slave.

"I have also recently upgraded his OS from winme"

When you say "upgrade", do you mean that you actually performed an upgrade install, or did you format the HDD & do a fresh install? A fresh install is always the preferrable method, especially when going from a 9x based system to an NT based system

Does the drive show in My Computer? Take a look at this article concerning ASPI layer drivers. http://aspi.radified.com/ I just had an issue with this and to some extent this can be an issue with most versions of windows. I rolled back to ASPI 4.60 to solve my problem. Follow the links to get up to speed about this issue. Look at Adaptec site also.

my problem is not burining a CD.
The Drive appears in 'my computer' but when you double click on it or right click and explore, the application (my computer) just hangs. this happens with all discs.

"my problem is not burining a CD"

I didn't say that - what I meant was your drive configuration isn't optimal. The DVD burner & DVD-ROM should be on separate channels, especially if you burn "on the fly"

I notice you blew off the "upgrade" question

"JAM, it is an upgrade not a full install. I have both revices on seconadry ide channel"

1. you should have done a fresh install, not an upgrade. That may or may not be your problem.

2. try splitting the optical drives. Make the DVD-ROM the primary slave...DVD burner the 2ndary master

after further investigation have found out that the problem DVDRW is able to play DVD with no problem - and they auto run. I also get similar things happening when i try to open and read files from an usb memory stick.iI can see the files but everything locks up when i try and access them. Files on hard drive and other DvdROM can be accessed ok.
