DVD player does not play DVD

June 24, 2011 at 02:40:51
Specs: Windows XP
My compaq harddrive dvd player does not play dvds, but will play Cds.

When I put in the DVD, such as my microsoft suite Dvd, the player will make some funny noises as though it's trying to get the DVD running and then fails. Cds work fine.

I went into disk management, and even though the dvd is in, it hasn't registered it. It also says the driver is working properly.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

If it is a desktop unit, get another DVD drive. They are too cheap to repair. ($30 ish)

A laptop unit - might want to try cleaning the lazer. It usually doesn't work for me, but occasionally it has claims of getting it to work for a short time. I'd get an external USB case to hold a standard DVD drive and attach it when needed. You'll spend about as much on a new DVD drive for the laptop ($75 ish), and still might be in the same place.

Sometimes a firmware update will fix the problem DVD drive. That relies on the manufacturer spending time and money to create the update. A few do.
