Recently, I downloaded a registry cleaner/computer cleaner, and now, my computer recognizes through various programs that my HP 1040 DVD writer is a CD drive, consequently I cannot burn any DVD's (although it will play). Without anything in it, under "My Computer", it shows up as a DVD drive, but as soon as I place a DVD-RW or DVD+RW in, it becomes a CD drive.
When I originally installed it, and for about 4 months, it worked just fine (WITHOUT "InCD"). Now, for some reason, I have "InCD", and I don't know where it came from (maybe reinstalled CD installation package that came with the drive).
Anyhow, I have been to numerous sites asking for help, with many ideas, but nothing has really worked.
I have tried deleting the hardware and associated program (Nero), and reinstalled, I have even tried System Restore to an earlier date (before the Registry Cleaner), but no luck.
HP tech went through a step-by-step, then ended up saying the unit was bad and to buy another. Easy way out, huh? I have a hard time believing that, because the unit will burn music to a CD-R, and play DVD in digital form.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you in advance.
Tony

What cleaner program did you use? CCleaner is a program that's highly recommended by folks in these forums.
If your burner is playing CDs, DVDs & burning CDs, the unit itself is *probably* OK.
InCD is a component of Nero. I suggest you uninstall all Nero related software, run CCleaner (both the Cleaner & the Registry Scan), then reboot & reinstall Nero.
BTW, when you install CCleaner, do NOT install Yahoo toolbar...make sure to uncheck the box.

You can repair Nero from the Control panel> add/ remove programs. Click on remove. You should get an option to repair. Go thru the entire list of applets and untick anything you don't wish to install, including InCD. This should fix the problem.

Thank you "jam" and "otherhill" for taking the time to assist. I will try your suggestions tonight and see what happens.
Are you both suggesting that the possible core of my problem is "InCD" ???
Do either of you think that it is possible that my "cleaner" that I installed could have deleted something critical to the functionality of my DVD unit? And if so, how would I ever figure out what it was and how to get it back to where it was before???
Just some hypotheticals . . .Thank you again for taking the time!
Tony

Some versions of InCD are not compatable with WinXP. There are also other items installed by default you may not want. Look at the list. Nero usually wants to install a player that takes over.
