DVD not reading some

I have a Dell laptop Inspiron 2200 with a NEC DVD+-RW ND6500A that will not read DVD's that were burnt on other DVD +RW wha t gives, does anyone know? I've updated firmware, others were burnt with Nero software.

Apart from not being able to read DVD-RW burned on other PCs can this machine read any other discs such as Windows XP, software installation CD, and burned DVD (not DVD-RWs)?

XPUser, Yes it reads cd's, and the other dvd's were not on RW's just writables, I have burnt a movie on it and it doesn't recognize it as a movie, while it will recognize a store bought movie.

also when I put the dvd in the player it sees it as a blank cd not even a dvd.

I've had exactly the same problem with the drive (NEC 6500a) on my inspiron 2200.. ironbically it was a replacement for a sony drive that did not work at all. Dell had no useful ideas to solve the problem... so I've given up and only use CDs and DVDs on another machine.
