I was going to get a DVD burner to make copies of my VHS and DVD & my kids Playstation2 games before the kids completely destroy my originals. What would be a good burner to buy and what software do I need?

You can also get a DVD burner and use software "Studio 8" by pinnacle for creating home movies on DVD. very easy to use. And "DVD X copy" to creat copies of copyrighted movies. A typical DVD movie might take up 9 gig, so 1 movie equals 2 dvd disc or 7 low resolution CDs
