I have a DVD drive that wont read DVDs bought or Burned but will read almost all CDs, Music Games or Software. What could be the deal? I dont know much but its about a 4-5 year old sony dvd-rom but it worked great til a few days ago. Could it be software or hardware, or anything else? Thanks JD

Your DVD laser died or almost died.
DVDs have at least two lasers, one for CD reading and one for DVD reading. Try a DVD cleaning cd and if nothing, replace the dvd drive - their is nothing you can do.

Just a suggestion although jd`s comment is almost certainly right.
I have a sony dru-710a dvd writer and the same thing happened to me problems with dvd writing and reading all of a sudden. i couldnt figure out why it had suddenly stopped working. So i tried up dating the firmware on the dvd unit itself not the drivers but the internal software. And to my amazement it works perfectly. Try doing a google for your model number and look in the sony pages for a firmware update see if it works to be honest i dont think it will this time but its worth a try before you buy another writer.
