DVD drive won't recognise blanks

I've got a DVD/CD RW drive (Phillips I think) on my PC which has been working fine, but yesterday it was failing to recognise blank CDs and DVDs. It was playing disks OK, it was just when I wanted to write to one I was getting messages like 'please insert disk in D drive'.
I have tried a variety of blank CDs and DVDs from different batches, and different burning software but no joy. Also, when I put a blank disk in and check the properties of the D drive it says there is 0% used space and 0% free space.
