Hello. I have a strange situation here: i have this dvd-rw drive (LG GSA-H42L) and now i am not be able to record anything with a double layer dvd, even the drive don't recognize new ones. The strange thing, is that when i put a new (unrecorded) double layer dvd on, the dvd driver icon in the my computer changes to a cd icon! I tried with several branches, and the same thing happens. The firmware is up to date. So, why does this thing happen ? thanks in advance.

Did the drive ever work with DVD DL disks?
What burning program are you using?
Did you install an 80 wire cable?
Are the MBoard chipset drivers installed?
Did you check the list of recommended DVD media?

1) Yes (although the final result of the recording process was not always 100 % fine)
2) I often use Pinnacle Studio.
3) My computer is working fine. It reads
older dvd dl disks i've recorded (despite the mentioned recording errors).
4) List of recommendation dvd media - that is a good point, but i don't think the small manual refered that. Thanks for the (very) quick reply.

What about the MBoard chipset drivers and the 80 wire cable?
Look in Device Manager at the listing for the controller that this drive is using. Right click on the controller and choose properties> advance settings and see if the drive is running in a DMA mode.

PQTR1X, for what it's worth, in the past I have had problems with windows recognizing blank DVDs. The weird thing is, when you loaded a blank DVD and checked My Computer, it would show it as a CD with a single audio track. The problem would come and go. I spent many hours searching for a fix. I found many others encountering the same problem but never found a fix.

Have youchecked for firmware updates for the DVD drive. DVD media has a code imprinted on them. This code allows the drive to identify the disc by manufacturer, speed, etc. As new media is manufactured you will sometimes need to update the firmware int he drive in order for it to properly identify the media.
For example if you bought a drive whent he fastest media available was 8x, then that drive may not be able to identify many/most 16x media.

You must have missed it but the OP stated in the original post that the firmware was up to date. I never gave it a thought about the the encoding myself.

Lets hear back from you.

So he did. After a quick check, the most current firmware I can find for that drive is just over a year old. I have at least 1 drive that cannot work with new media because there is no new firmware available for it. Although that drive is much older than this posters, the fact that the most current firmware is a year old might be the problem.

Michael J, you're probably right. I just tried with another dvd-dl branch and the same thing happened. So, what should i do ? "kill" some LG' workers so they can give me a new firmware ?
Sorry for the bad joke, and thank you all for your help.
