Actually, I write this topic for the second time, My DVD-ROM drive doesn't read any DVD's it reads CD's and PS2 DVD-ROMs !!

What's that ? I returned one already after 4 month of use, it was replaced with a new one under warranty, the new one has the same trouble now after 4 to 5 days in this pc !!

It's model HL-DT-ST DVD GDR H30N
I don't know why it's happening we don't use the DVD drive that much.

The replacement drive was probably a reconditioned unit. How much is shipping costing you to R&R the drive both ways?

From a little Googling on that drive it looks like there are many with problems. I suggest you just cut your losses and buy a new unit. Try Newegg.com. They sometimes have specials on burners with free shipping. Be sure to get the correct interface (IDE or SATA). I would avoid LG. I have had good luck with Lite-on drives.

I am curious as to why you don't want a drive that can burn DVD media.

Just because, I have one already in my laptop computer. And, I have old pc that wouldn't manage the power of DVD writing drive well, even if I have 500 WAT PSU, it won't give enough power for my nVidia 7600GS video card which needs a lot of power.

My pc is home computer, it's used for nearly everything.

But if you don't try burning the power and processor speed don't come into play.

The issue I see is that you are buying old technology by getting a unit that can burn CD media but only read DVD media.

I don't think the power consumption to burn a DVDR/RW is any different than CDR/RW. The issue is the speed of the processor and available RAM.

I suggest that next time you get a burner and Not burn DVDs with it instead.

BTW, if the system specs at the top are for your home system they are more than adequate to burn DVDs.

My pc specs :-
Pentium 4 HT @ 2.8GHz w/ 256 L2 cache
1GB of DDR1 RAM
Motherboard Intel D845PESV
nVidia 7600GS 512Mb AGP Video Card
Integerated Sound.
Using all of my power cables.

My mboard is an old one, and I think it's little low in power for my Video card although, I've changed my PSU from 300 W to 500 W recently.

No prob about that, I don't want to get DVD writing drive just because I don't need it.

My Video card driver shows an error message about the power so, I think more drives installed will affect the power that the video card will consume.

Thanks.

My point is that you don't need to use the DVD burning capabilities but there is much more choice with DVD burners as opposed to readers. The drive isn't going to use more power than the one you selected. Besides, you never know when you may want to burn DVDs.

Do you regularly backup your personal data? I use Ghost and usually burn to DVDR. If you don't backup somewhere you are asking for trouble. Optical disks are the most reliable method IMO.

You're right, about backing up, I don't have a lot of data to back up, CDs are OK for backing up my important data in my pc.

Most of my important data lies on M.S Office documents and tiny Visual Studio projects that won't take more than 500 MB.

And thanks for the info about the DVD-RW drive power consumption, I thought it makes difference.

I just wondering about Blu-ray drives, there is no official pc products come in Blu-ray discs so, Why are these drives important ?

DVD-RDL is big enough to contain the biggest pc software I think.

Thank you for answering.

IMO blueray is not needed by the average computer user. The only advantage of blueray drives is that you can watch blueray movies in HD on your computer. Of course you can also burn compatible media.

Blueray burnable media is like $10 each. I can buy a ton of CDR or DVDR media for ten bucks.

I don't know about others but I would much rather watch HD programming on my 58" TV as opposed to my 22" LCD display.
