DVD drive not playing CD's but plays DVD's fine.

Specs: Windows 8.1, corei7/8gb
I am having a nearly identical issue to the person in this thread:

The date shown for the tracks for the CD's on mine though is 12/21/1994. These are newer CD's that work just fine, and prior to the upgrade I know my laptop's DVD drive played CD's just fine. I don't play them that often though, so that is why I am just now finding this out.

The issue is only with audio CD's, it plays DVD's just fine. I tried the uninstall method given in the thread linked above and it didn't help. Also, tried updating driver. Anyone have any ideas?

Edit: I got it working... Kind of. I tried a couple more times to uninstall it and it is kind of working now. It messes up if I try to launch a CD by clicking on the DVD drive though and still shows the odd information if I do and won't play the disc until I eject it and reinsert it. If I try to access it from a media player it works, although it stops working if I try to change tracks.

Anyone know why I can't access the disc from the DVD drive icon in whatever the equivalent of My Computer is called in windows 8.1?

Edit 2: It seems to be working better the more I use it. Maybe it just had some dust that build up on the laser since it was so seldom used? Maybe the spinning of the drive has helped to dislodge it.

This is a very long shot but at least it's easy to try:
Turn off and remove power cord. Remove main battery too if it's a laptop. Before re-assembling hold the Power Off/On button down for about 20 seconds to discharge the motherboard components. At odd times it has been know to "unstick" things.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You may need to set the type of disk the optical drive show autostart. General is a good choice.

Go to Control Panel> Autoplay-

I've just seen your edits. Yes, it does seem like you've been having trouble with the mechanicals. Maybe a CD/DVD lens cleaning kit would help, although what you describe sounds more like other things.
