Recently I decided to replace an old CD/DVD player that no longer reads DVDs.

I set the ‘new drive’ as the master and the old drive (LiteOn) as the salve both are on the same IDE channel. I loaded windows it picked up and installed the new drive as it normally does. It showed up in my computer as a new drive. I also say my old drive was also populated. Opening the old drive led to an error message ‘this drive no longer exists…” Loading media from the ‘new drive’ caused the system to hang. (HDD activity full red) The media on the ‘new drive’ does not load even through the ‘old drive’ works fine.

So I opened Device manager and sure enough all three drives appeared just as they did in my computer. I uninstalled the old drive and it was also gone from my computer. I then proceeded to reboot and found the drive somehow magically appeared back in My Computer and device manager.
So then I opened Event View and found a system event error. “The driver detected a controller error on \Device\CdRom6.” Event ID 11. Well thanks for the update- windows of course proposed no solutions. The error only appears when drive is attempting to load media. So I went to Asus website to see if I could find a driver for the IDE, finding none that applied to Vista 32-bit I decided to download the XP version. That of course did not work. I then thought less of Asus drivers. (When I have access to the CD that came with main board I can look for the driver- through one would think it would be on their website…)

So then I thought perhaps it is the firmware for the drive and download and installed latest version. This did not work either.
So then I checked in Device Manger under IDE ATAPI controllers and found DMA is enabled on the active channel. Both drives were sitting on the same IDE channel. The current mode= Ultra DMA Mode 2 and Ultra DMA Mode 3. I do not know if this setting is correct.

Samsung is a SH-S162L. Motherboard is M2N-SLI Deluxe.

So if someone can point to a better Asus driver for SIS IDE controller or any other options it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

With only one IDE channel on your board I would switch the drives "old drive" to Master. If this doesn't help it maybe time to buy new one to replace the old one."that no longer reads DVDs"

I have a total of three drives. The "old one" that no longer plays is now completely removed from my system. The problem is this "old drive" keeps coming back after I restart the system- like it still exists some place in 'device manager- memory' I believe this is affecting why the 'new drive' (the Samsung) does not work.

Try uninstall or remove in device manager from safemode.
