DVD Drive Freezes Computer

August 8, 2005 at 07:30:49
Specs: Windows XP Pro SP2, AMD XP 2700+ / 1.5 GB DDR

Every time I put in a DVD in my DVD drive my computer will freeze. The drive will be spinning like it's scanning the DVD, but the computer will be frozen. Like my mouse will stop moving and everything. If I pop out the DVD and then put it back in and then the DVD will work sometimes. The computer will unfreeze and the DVD will play normally. Usually if a drive isn't reading a DVD then the computer normally doesn't freeze so I am thinking it might not be a hardware issue completely. I tried restarting my comp and everything. I don't know what's going on. It still reads CDs just fine. I tested CDs and they scan just fine. I'm thinking that the dvd drive might be failing, but i hope not. I'm going to try to swap it out with another one today and see if it helps and try a DVD drive cleaner. I was listening to the drive while the computer was frozen and the drive was still spinning, but at a slow speed. It sounded like it was still trying to read the disc even though the prompt window had already appeared, which is weird. By prompt window i mean the window that pops up prompting you to choose which program you want to open the dvd with. I also tried to uninstall the drivers for the drive, restarted windows, and had it reinstall itself. that didn't help at all. any ideas?

System specs:

1.5 GB DDR SD RAM PC3200
AMD XP 2700+
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe Motherboard

Had the same problem where the mouse and keyboard would freeze when an optical drive was used. In my case it turned out to be the Nero InCD program. Unistall and reinstall cured it.

Check with another drive or test that one in different computer if you can. If it seems ok check what programs are starting up with XP and turn them off.(msconfig) See if the problem still exists. If not turn them on 1 by 1 till it returns.

Good luck.

The thing is the DVD works in my DVD burner drive, but not my reader. It won't lock up if the DVD is placed in the burner. I'm going to try to test the thing when I get back home from work.
