Just recently, my DVD drive quit working. When I put a disk in the drive, it makes a small "click-click" sound and can't read the disk. I tried uninstalling it from device manager and reconnecting the cables on the inside to no avail. Any help? Thanks!

Is the drive identified by model number in the BIOS screens?
Does Device Manager say the drive is working properly?
Google for Upper & Lower filters in WinXP.
Lots of this same issue lately. Possible Microsoft update issue.

How do I tell if the device is identified by model number in the BIOS?
I don't know. I took it out, but I will put it back in tomorrow and see if it is.
What?
Thanks!

I can't see the details in the POST screen, just the DELL splash screen, but, this may count. I put the drive back into my computer as the master drive and tried to boot Ubuntu off of a live CD and it wouldn't boot.

Okay, now for the answers. Both of the top two questions you asked are Yes.

Sorry, keep forgetting some things.
Also, when I put a disk into the drive, Windows XP's little disk appears by the mouse pointer for a second then goes away. The disk drive appears in My Computer but when you click on it it says to insert a disk. My other CD-RW drive still works and a DVD-ROM drive that I put in there (I've been watching a lot of movies on my PC lately) to take the place of my DVD-RW drive works also. Hopefully I am not leaving anything out this time!
