Just recently, my DVD drive quit working. When I put a disk in the drive, it makes a small "click-click" sound and can't read the disk. Is the drive identified by model number in the BIOS screens? Does Device Manager say the drive is working properly? Google for Upper & Lower filters in WinXP. Lots of this same issue lately. Possible Microsoft update issue.

I should have said POST screens. Watch for it in the POST screens.

I can't see the details in the POST screen, just the DELL splash screen, but, this may count. Sorry, keep forgetting some things. Also, when I put a disk into the drive, Windows XP's little disk appears by the mouse pointer for a second then goes away. The disk drive appears in My Computer but when you click on it it says to insert a disk. My other CD-RW drive still works and a DVD-ROM drive that I put in there (I've been watching a lot of movies on my PC lately) to take the place of my DVD-RW drive works also.
