Name: Harry (by Hugger1)
I recently bought a newer PC, it only has a CD drive in it. I'm thinking of upgrading to a CD-RW. But I've seen the prices and it's almost the same price for a DVD-RW. My question is what is "dual-layer" and "double-layer?" As well, what is this +/-R? And I'm presuming a DVD-RW will allow me to burn CD's?
Harry

With a DVD/CD RW you can burn CDs and DVDs and they are rewritable. That's what all that means. I bought a Liteon DVD/CD RW that came with Nero Express from tigerdirect.com and I haven't had any problems with it at all.

Just get a DVD burner, it can handle ALL the optical drive duties. It will play & burn both CDs & DVDs.
The "+" (plus) & "-"(dash) are competing DVD formats. Since a standard hasn't been reached, almost all burners support both.
Double Layer (DL) means that you can burn twice as much data to a DVD, provided you use DL discs. Single layer (SL) discs can hold up to 4.7GB, double layer can hold up to 8.5GB. DL discs usually cost about twice as much as SL & they generally have to be burned at a slower speed.

And make sure you read the minimum requirements on the box. Usually a CD burner is fine on the 'new computer' specs you have listed but a DVD burner usually requires much higher specs than what you are showing.

Guess that shows I should updtae my specs more often. My PC now is able to support the DVD burner.
