Subject: DVD copying on the flyOS: XPCPU/Ram: 2.17GHz/ 768MB |
Comment: I have a 16x dvd burner but only burning at 8x. The Burner is on primary Slave. I also have a 16x dvd rom on primary slave. I don't mind that it takes 22 minutes so much as it eats up 100% CPU usage. Also the burner buffer jumps up and down during burning. Is this normal? or should I try a different arrangement? It burns faster from hard drive then disc to disc and buffers stay at no less then 97%. ASUS A7V8X AMD XP 2700+ 2.17ghz 768mb ddr 2700 nVidia 128mb FX 5200 WD 80gb SE DVD R/RW

Reply: (edit)If you do alot of disk to disk burning you should have the source and target drives on opposite IDE channels. The best configuration would be for the DVD burner to be the primary drive on the Secondary channel. That would place the source DVD drive as the slave behind your boot drive.

Reply: (edit)Is DMA enabled on all drives? I don't use XP so I am unsure about this but are there options for how tasks are performed? In other words in the forground or background. I don't burn that many DVDRs but when I burn CDRs I am able to surf the net or play freecell but can't play MP3s. There is a limit on what the CPU can do. Burning at 8X may be your threshold. Have you ever tried burning at 4x or even slower, if it results in freeing up CPU cycles for other tasks. Keep in mind you are never going to do two heavy duty tasks together. I use DVDR for Ghosting my drives but I leave the system alone at those times. Not good to be accessing data at the same time you are cloning it, so I don't know how long it takes.

Reply: (edit)Yea DMA is enabled on all drives. I haven't tried copying dvd's before until now but I know what you mean when copying cd's it doesn't even effect my system. Oil I don't need to shrink them they are exact copy's of burnt dvd's. Mabey the iso thing don't sound bad unless it will take more then 22 min. I have other computers to use while copying so the cpu usage isn't a big deal unless it would affect the copies. Reply: (edit)DVDdecrypter with this machine, average dual layer dvd rip is about 12 to 15 minutes. I like the video with just 5.1 dolby audio stream. Theres a few I opted for the DTS stream. Reason for iso to shrink is many dvds have deleted scenes I like to insert where they were originally intended. Shrink has the time and frame notes to do a really clean job. I just hate titles, menus. Which I leave out. When I select a disc I just want it to play. Without 20 minutes of previews or even haveing to navigate to the start menu. The HUNT For KPACHbIЙ OKTIABR
