Hi all, trying to install a DVD burner I got off an Emachine pc. I thought all DVD, CD drives etc were compatible but I think I'm wrong. Maybe not compatible with my Dell server? The power cables are the same but the ribbon connector on the Dell is larger than the one on the DVD itself. Anyway I can get some kind of ribbon converter? Adapter of some sort? Ide I believe it's called? Sorry, just learning,, thanks for the help..

Your system uses SCSI, not IDE

Thanks Jam,, Ok SCSI, that's why the connectors are different. Thanks, so, the dvd/cd writer I have I can not use? No connector adaptor or anything? Sorry if it's a dumb question.. thanks for the link aswell.

You could install a PCI based SCSI card in the computer but with the price of drives what they are it isn't work the effort. If you did do that you may or may not be able to use the drive as a boot device, depending on your boot options. Stay with an IDE drive.

Hey O, I think you have it backwards. PCN has a Dell system w/SCSI but the DVD drive he wants to use is IDE. You have the right idea though...he could get a PCI IDE controller card for about $20.

The SCSI connector is LONGER than the IDE connector

I'm confused as to which the DVD drive is.

Doesn't the Dell system board have an onboard IDE connector?

As I stated in response #3 check your BIOS to see if Booting from an add in Controller card is an option. This is important IF that is the only optical drive installed in the system.

I posted a link in response #1...within that link is a link to the specs:

http://support.dell.com/support/edo...

There doesn't appear to be an IDE connector on the board, so a PCI controller would be the way to go. Here's one possibility:
