I always seem to having a problem with reading/burning DVD-R and CD-R, but almost never had a problem with DVD-RW and CD-RW.
I have several computers and have same symptoms. I tried different media, different DVD-burner, and different CD-burner, but alway have a problem with R media. I don't what makes R(not rewritable) so bad.

If this problem is with a specific machine, then there might be something wrong with your particular burner or something misconfigured on that machine.

If that is not the case, then there is soemthing wrong in the process you are following. I've burned literally thousands of CD-Rs and DVD-Rs. Rarely do I have a problem.

If you are having this problem outside of a single machine/drive please post the steps you take to burn a CD/DVD-R so that we can provide help.
