DVD burners come in two different competing formats: DVD-RW/-R amd DVD+RW/+R. The difference is basically in how the code is written to the disc. It is kind of like VHS vs Beta, if you are old enough to remember that...
It has become a mute point, as most manufacturers offer a dual format drive, which will write both +/-RW and +/-R.
THere are now also double layer dvd burners hitting the market. These can also be dual format. They offer a 9gig capacity as opposed to the standard 4.7.
All DVD writers can also write CD's (CD RW and CD R)
The DVD/CDRW are combo drives. They read DVD's but do not write DVD's. They can write CDRW and CDR.
