I have bought a HP computer the m7654.uk and wanted to back up some of my media. So, I bought some dvd-rw and had problems writing to them. Dvd+rw and dvd-rw both freeze my computer up and dvd-rams say that they cannot be formatted. I have updated to the latest firmware and done a fresh install of vista and neither had any joy.
I contacted hp's customer care who said "Vista is no capable of writing dvds without 3rd party software" which I'm no expert but i'm sure this is not the case as it gives you the option to and also it allows me to write to cd-r/rw and dvd+/-r's.
After gettin hughly frustrated with hp technical support I decided if anyone else can shed some light into this problem?
Thankyou ever so much for your time.p.s Info on my pc can be found at: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...

This might have been better posted in the Vista forum.
Why not go with the flow and just use DVDR or CDR media? Certainly much cheaper and you shouldn't really erase your backup anyway. Something may go wrong before making the replacement and you won't have the files. Most things you want to backup don't change anyway. Music and pictures for instance.
DVDR is more likely to be compatible with a different computer later, should the backup be needed.

I have updated to the latest firmware and done a fresh install of vista and neither had any joy.
I hate to say this but IMO it's overkill and totally unnecessary.

Vista is capable of burning to DVDs using two different file systems (Live File System, and Mastered File System).
Your PC came with a third party software burner that you could have used to take care of the DVD-RWs.
All in all, I hope you will take as much time as you possibly can to read up everything there is to read especially about the new file systems before using the new PC. You may wish to begin with this page...

Hi, I have tried 3rd party software I have Nero at home and had no luck with thay either. my Computer freezses when I put the dvd in still. The reason I wrote the help in the hardware forum was that vista and xp had the same effect leading me to think it is because of the drive more than windows. Could the drive be faulty?

Thanks for your reply, I tried doing what wolfcub told me and still had no luck. Has anybody else got any ideas please?

Going back to your first post concerning HP tech support stating that Vista isn't capable with out a 3rd party program. Have you actually read any help files for Vista. Just because there is a listing for that media doesn't mean it will work. I don't know one way or the other. I DO know that MSoft had many issues with drivers that delayed shipping of Vista upgrades to people that bought OEM computers with WinXP installed and received a coupon for a Vista upgrade.
This leads my to believe that there may be an issue that you can't resolve right now.
That said, 3rd party softwares for this type of task are usually superior to what MSoft can do natively.
If considering any third party burner software verify it will run under Vista.
