I have a Liteon LDW 851s DVD burner. It will play music DVD. The hardware is recognised as LDW 851s. The explorer tree indictes a DVD. However, when I try to burn to DVD the hardware changes to a CD drive. I had this problem when I first installed the DVD 2 years ago. Liteon provided instructions to fix but have not replied to further emails. Problem has arisen again due to computer repair.I hyave latesy firmware. Can anyone help?

Yah, Richard59 is right, what burning software are you using ?

If you are using nero startsmart(normally bundled with the writer), then you need to select CD or DVD from the top of the menu, or else it's always CD by default. Newer version (6 and above) has no such problem, but normally the bundled version is older (since you bought it 2 years ago).....

To Richard 59 and Milkyway -
When I first had the problem 2 years ago, I had Roxio 6 Easy CD/DVD creator. Now after a major crash I was advised through another forum to purchase Acronis True Image 8.0. I am t5rying to do a backup to dvd just in case there is a major problem in the future and I hard drive fails.
I am not so sure that it is a software problem. If a simply look at the Drive on the explorer tree and place a blank DVD in the drive, the drive looks at the disc and then changes to CD. At that stage I have not even thought about which software to use though when I do use acronis the problem occurs also. I input on acronis that I want to burn to DVD and insert a disck when asked. The acronis details then automatically change to CD.

For dave, Richard and milkyway.
I am not an expert. Not sure what you mean as regards ASPI and IDE. Please explain. Tell me where to look.
I do have a CD drive also F:
DVD drive is E:
I think it may have something to do with the fact I have 2 drives.
Thanks for help

The ASPI driver is one that helps diferent parts of the computer interfaces to work together and the IDE channels are the connections from your motherboard to the hard drive/cd-rom etc - they used to have 40 strands in the ribbon - they have now got 80 - some of the older drives wont or dont like working with the 80 strand -also most dvd rom manufacturers reccommend keeping the master hard drive seperate from the dvd rom - the ddvd likes to be setup as a master drive as well so if yuo've got 2 IDE channels connection 0 should be hard drive no 1 and connection 1 should be dvd rom set as master - As for the ASPI driver if you go to the Adaptec site and serch for ASPI for winxp it has a small utility check so you will know whether your ASPI layer is up to date - you will also need to go to the web site of you dvd rom maker and see if they have got there own ASPI driver - NERO does and that actually works on the dvd rom drive Has the drive alwaysbeen a problem - you may need to check the jumper settongs on the cd / dvd drives - if yo look in between the power connector and the ribbon yuo'll see 4 pairs of pins and hopefullly ther will be a connector strapping two together - that's the ju,mpers - you need tio se if the dvd rom is set as master and the cd rive - if it.s on the same channel should be a slave - if you look on the plastic around the pins there is usually a little diagram but failing that the two pins closest to the ribbon are usually the master settings

I first had the problem when I first installed the DVD drive 18 months ago. Liteon gave me instruction on hoe to fix. I have looked in device manager - DVD is located in O. CD drive is located in 1. It does not have anything to do with the connections. First time it happened I changed some settings somewhere and it has worked up until having my system repaired due to major fault.
