Hi

Iam posting this problem on behalf of my brother, who has no access to the internet.

The problem is with his DVD burner which he has had for a year now and is a MSI DR8-A2. The problem is when a blank DVD is used in the drive it seems to want to read the disc, even though its blank. Its just continuosly spinning the disc and doing nothing. This in turn prevents Nero from loading and sends the HDD into a frenzy of trying to load it. Nero only loads when i press the eject button on the DVD burner.

Ive taken the drive out of my brothers computer and tried it in mine (which is significantly better spec wise). Still the drive does the same and prevents Nero from loading.

I know the Firmware is up to date as I have updated it myself when I installed the drive. And i doubt thats the problem as its been working fine for over a year now. He's been using the same make of discs since hes had the drive. So i doubt the drive has a problem with the discs.

I will say that the drive will burn CD's no problem and it will also play DVD's perfectly. So im a little stumped.

Computer Specs:
Windows XP
MOBO unknown but has a 1Ghz Duron processor
256MB RAM

Thanks for any help

Hi

Thanks for the advise. I must admit I never thought of that, you never think of the obvious. My brother has now told me that when nero eventually loads he can only burn DVD's at a low speed setting as any higher will fail.

Rather than turning off autoplay altogether just insert the disc and hold down the left Shift key to override autoplay.

Cheap or lousy media will cause the problems with the speed. Try different media.

Also, you should always start with the proper IDE configuration. I don't know how many IDE devices you have or how they're setup, but it's usually best to have the burner on the 2ndary channel as master. Do not use the cable select jumper, use master or slave.
