I am having a very difficult time burning DVD's on my new computer. Here is what is happening:
Whenever I try to burn a dvd the system locks up and I have to do a hard reboot. I have tried 3 different burning programs and different types of dvd media. I have also tried two different DVD drives, with the exact same symptoms. I have updated the mother board bios, and the burner firmware. I have replased the IDE cables and checked the master/slave settings. If I try to boot the computer with a blank DVD in the drive, the system takes a long time to boot and then the drive doesn't show up in device manager. I am running a SATA hard drive with the burner and another DVD ROM drive on the primary IDE channel. I have tried the other IDE channel and I have tried it with the DVD ROM drive disconnected. I can burn CD's with the drive like a charm, but when I try the same operation with a DVD it locks up. Can anyone help me!

Home built or pre made pc?
DVD burner set as master, secondary ide?
Power supply ratings?
NO CHEAP POWER SUPPLYS!!!!
At least 512mb of ram.
Write speed?
Try 4x write speed.
Decent discs, no value priced discs will do. Walmart is selling memorex cool color disc 14.99 for a 30 cake box. The discs are Ritek 05.
Shut down all other apps running in background when burning.
Confirm dma is on for optical and hdrives.

The computer was pre-made by Cyberpower Systems. They have been unable to fix the problem. I went through two DVD drives with them, and then they suggested I get another model of drive and try that. Well, each of the drives has behaved in the same way.
I have tried the dvd burner as both master and slave on both IDE channels.
I'm not sure about the power supply rating. I'll have to check that.
There is 1 Gig of ram in the system.
I have tried different burning speeds with different types and brands of media.
DMA is on for the optical drives. I didn't check the SATA hard drive.
I have also checked the RAM by trying each of the two 512 mb modules seperately.
Do you really think it could be the power supply?
