I have a Lite on SHW-160P6S DVD Burner that is not working right. It will not recognize most any discs and will not recognize any blank media. The only disk I can get it to see is a nero disk. I tried doing the deletion of the Upper and lower limits as was suggested by many sites but when I look in the registry it has no upper or lower limit listed. is there a way to fix the registry issue or am I screwed???

If the drive can read SOME disks (Nero) then the laser or power circuits are probably going bad. Try some other factory CDs/DVDs to see if it can read them. You could try a lense cleaner, if you can find one. You could also check to be sure the cables are snug.

How old is the drive? Have you burned many disks with it?

I consider optical drives disposable hardware. They are so cheap now that it almost isn't worth bothering with them.

Look at newegg.com for pricing on replcaments. Many are now with free shipping. Be sure to get the same interface. IDE or SATA. IDE is the 1 1/2" wide data cable.

I tried more disks and no change I took the drive out and put my CD burner in and it is not seen by the computer as a CD Burner only as a CD Rom drive. I think the registry issue is the problem but I just don't know!

Did you recently install/uninstall any software or hardware? Many hardware and software programs use ASPI layer drivers. They sometimes get replaced by a new program and it can cause problems. Look at the link below for more information on ASPI layer drivers.

I removed all Burning soft ware and removed my ASPI version and reinstalled the ASPI to version 4.6 reinstalled the software for burning and nothing chnaged. Even my normal CD Burner will not function. I replaced the IDE cable just to be sure and no change. My DVD Rom drive still works fine. I think my system needs a clean install to fix the registry issue. As I have no other idea to try! Only problem with that is I have a Windows XP upgrade disk but my windows 98 disk is 400 miles away so I guess I am screwed!

As a side note I tried a microsoft fix for CD Burner issues and it said my Upperfilter and lower filter do not exist on my computer but it didnt say how to fix it!

Many recommend indiscriminately removing the upper and lower filter, of which there are many. I don't recommend that as a blanket approach. After all, they are there for a reason.

I found a thread that may help fix your problem Look for the response by "dalawrie".

Also, if you know when the problem started, a System Restore from a date prior to that should restore the Registry.

I tried all restore points that I had and no such luck fixing this issue! It seams that since the Upperlimit and lowerlimit are missing from the registry it wont work, I don't know how to fix that registry issue either. I think the only recourse I have is to reinstall the OS clean and go from there!
