My friend put together a PC with some old parts he had, 768mb ram, 1.7 AMD Athlon CPU. i bought a new SATA hdd, power supply, Pioneer DVD-/+R.
FOr 6 months i've had no problems with the PC, however 3 weeks ago when i attempted to burn a CD/DVD the PC would freeze mid session (reading or writting) after making a loud 2 second 'hypering up and click' noise and after after 7-10 seconds the PC completly freezes. Now its developed into a more severe issue, everytime a CD/DVD item is inserted into the drive it makes the same noise and will allways freeze.
I dont know how to approach the issue, could it be fixed via software updates??
Thanks,
Phil

I doubt it. It sure sounds like the optic drive has died.
I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Or your power supply is defective.
Failing power supplies are common and can cause your symptoms.
Check your PS.

This may not help but, I had a similar problem with my pc freezing completely whenever I inserted a disc in the optical drive. No strange noises though.
Turns out it was Nero's InCd software. Once removed no problem.

That sounds like a driver issue possibly. You might want to have these guys look into it. I used them and they are very efficient and they get things fixed in no time. http://www.yourtechi.com
