Dual monitors question

Specs: Windows XP
Hi, I would like to run a second monitor from my pc. Unfortunately I am not technical when it comes to computers at all.
I have heard I need a dual input graphics/video card, or both?
My current monitor is plugged in the back of the tower but it doesnt appear to be in one of the empty card slots, but on its own, ie, It looks as though I would not be able to remove the housing around it to put something in that has dual outputs.

Can I still have dual monitor set up and what would I need to purchase, and change on my pc for this to be possible.

I do apologise for my lack of understanding on this subject and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a helpful page on your machine. From what you have described, it sounds like you have onboard video as opposed to a graphics card. You can use dual monitors with the right vid card. According to the specs, your machine can use PCI-E cards. That means PCI EXPRESS cards, not PCI. You will have to remove the cover as described on the above page and install the card in the PCI-E slot on your motherboard. Try looking on www.newegg.com for the card. Good Luck....

Thanks for that. So if I got one of these cards, would one monitor stay in the inbuilt socket, and one in the new card, or would I have to get a dual input card, and plug them both into that?

Both in the new card. You need a dual output card, not input. Make sure to check the types of connections on the card, i.e HDMI / S VIDEO etc. Make sure your monitor has these connections. DVI or SVGA for monitors, hdmi or s vid for tv.

Make sure you order a DVI to VGA converter at the same time. They tend to be a few bucks on the internet but up to twenty locally

This is what they look like

What kind of monitors do you intend on connecting? Post models if you don't know the type.

Also, what do you use your computer for? Do you play games? If so, list the newest game you have.
