Comment:

This question has probably been asked before, but i couldn't really find it by searching though the posts.

I am considering buying a motherboard with dual channel support.

Looking into purchasing memory, I see that some is specifically designated "dual channel" ddr and some is not.

I understand that I need to have TWO identical memory chips to use dual channel. (running AMD Processor).

My question is do I have to buy the memory that specifically says Dual channel on it, or will single channel memory work for dual channel?

If it will run dual channel with any two identical ram chips, but the "dual channel" ram has better performance, then please state so.

Thank you for reading! and thanks in advance for posting!

George

"Dual channel" memory sticks are exactly the same as the modules sold singly (sp?). The only difference is that the dual channel sticks are matched pairs that are supposedly tested and certified to work in dual channel. So, if they don't work in dual channel you can return them.

However, for dual channel to work the modules must be technically identical: same size, same timings, etc. They don't have to be from the same manufacturer. Unless you can save a lot of money by not buying a matched pair or if you already have say a 1GB stick, I'd suggest getting the matched pair. I like to reduce the amount of variables where things can go wrong when building a system.

Michael J, and Sabertooth:

Thank for your your help. the information provided was useful.

So as I see it now,

The main difference between these two chips are that one has just been specifically tested for Dual Channel, and the other hasn't. But they will both work in duel channel.

If I don't need to get the specific dual channel memory that I am looking at purchasing, the following:

(I like ultra memory. I have never had any problems with it, plus its fairly cheap)

Thanks for your help!

Nothing speaks volumes like prior track records, if Ultra has been good and problem-free for you in the past, sticking with it makes perfect sense.

I've heard all kinds of horrid tales about TD and their rebate procedures so be extra careful and detailed in your transactions with them.

SaberTooth:

I guess I am just a lucky one. I have never had problems getting my rebates back, (although the 6-8 week wait is always annoying).

Anyway, thanks for everyone for posting. I am learning new stuff all the time!
