ok so i want to get this descent mobo and like it uses dual channel, do i NEED to go dual chanel or can i just place 1xGB in one slot and be done with it, so ya and then i would like to know if i do decide on dual channel can it be 2 of any 1GB as long as there both DDR400 (in my case) or do they need to be the same model too??
PC:
CPU: P4 2.66 GHz
RAM: 1GB
HDD: 250GB
GPU: Geforce FX 5500Laptop:
CPU: Turion 64 x2 Tl-50
RAM: 2GB
HDD: 160GB
GPU: Mobility Radeon x1600 128mb dedicated, 384Mb shared 512

as long as the dual channel is the same speed it should work. it will actually work if the 2 are different speed, however, it will work at the lower ram's speed. if dual channel is optional...im not sure. check your bios to see if you can turn dual channel mode off. also, blue slots are dual channel and black are single channel. see if you have a black slot. they usually come with both if it supports dual channel.

If you insert a single stick of RAM then it will work in Single channel mode.
To go further...If you have four slots then you place the single stick on slot # 0 (closest to the Processor).
If you want to add a second stick then insert it in Slot # 2. (Single channel still)
To get dual channel you will need to add another two sticks in slots #1 and #4.
They do not need to be the same maker but it is better if all sticks are identical to each other to guanentee their compatibilty to each other (particularly the speed and latency ratings but as noted previously; they can run at the slowest speed installed).

Some motherboards like fic motherboards and a few other require you to put in 2 pairs of the same ram considering it's a all dual channel motherboard. 1 stick of ram won't work, which isn't a bad thing considering most of everything now of days comes in pairs and dual channel is the way to go.
