When you install Linux it will create a dual boot menu. Try Linux Mint, it's a modified version of Ubuntu and you can install it as an application instead of creating a separate partition for Linux. If you don't like it, you simply uninstall it.

You have a few options:

1. run PCLinux OS as a Virtual Machine using a program such as VirtualBox or Microsoft Virtual PC
2. install PCLinux on a separate HDD & use a boot manager
3. repartition your current HDD into at least two partitions...one for XP, one for Linux. The 2nd partition will have to be broken down further into 3 partitions (root, swap, home)...this will be done during the Linux installation. The bootloader will be installed automatically...make sure it goes onto the XP partition or the MBR, NOT the Linux root partition.

Do a google search for "how to dual boot XP Linux" without the quotes

I'm a fan of Linux Mint myself. I'm currently running Linux Mint Xfce on one of my systems.
