DSL not detected

February 12, 2011 at 11:45:17
Specs: Windows XP
I have a new e machine labtop and a new westell 1600 modem. My ethernet cable and dsl cord are new as well. However, when I try to set up the internet the screen reads "dsl not detect. My don't have a land line phone so I'm using no filters and have tried my other phone jack w/o success. I've called my internet provider with no success.

I wanted to try again w/o the company sending over a computer tech. I'm hoping it's something simple that I can do. Thanks.

"a new westell 1600 modem"

Did you make a typo ?

When I search with: westell 1600
I get very few "hits".

When I look here:

Westell
Technical Support
http://www.westell.com/technical-su...

I find that .....

If it's a new one it's probably a westell 6100.

When I search with: westell 6100
I get lots of "hits".

If it is a 6100, find the model in the list at the above page and tell us which one it is.

READ the installation directions !

If the quick install directions or similar don't get you the desired result, there is probably a full manual you can READ - if it came with a CD, it would be on that.
.......

If you did not have an ADSL internet package previously, it takes a short amount of time after you order your ADSL service to install the ADSL equipment at the other end of the connection at the nearest telephone exchange.
Were you told how long that would take ?
If you haven't waited at least that long, the equipment may not be hooked up on the other end of the telephone line yet.

If you DO have an ADSL connection, the led that indicates you have one will light upon the modem regardless if whether you can connect to the internet on the computer ! All that requires is that the telephone cable is connected to the modem and that the modem has power !
.........

"My don't have a land line phone so I'm using no filters"

The phone line for the ADSL connection must be connected - to the nearest telephone exchange.

What are you using to to connect to the Westell modem ?

A wired network connection ? A network cable between your computer's wired network adapter and the modem ?

Apparently it's a standalone modem.

Do you have a router between your computer and the modem ?
If yes, are you trying to connect to the router via a network cable, or wirelessly ?

Are you trying to use the modem via a USB cable connection?

If yes,
- you MUST install software for for the modem in order to be able to use a USB connection !

- you may need to use a different USB port.

E.g. the modem may not be detected properly or not be able to connect to the internet unless the USB cable is plugged into a USB port built into the laptop.

Troubleshooting USB device problems including for flash drives, external drives, memory cards.

Check the obvious. Make sure the power is plugged in & the modem is turned on. Make sure the phone cable is securely attached at both ends. Make sure the ethernet cable is securely attached at both ends. Make sure your ethernet cable is standard cable, not a crossover cable. And make sure the ethernet port is enabled on your laptop.

If you DO have an enabled ADSL connection, the led that indicates you have one will light upon the modem (a short time after you connect the telephone cable) regardless of whether you can connect to the internet on the computer !
All that requires is that the telephone cable is connected to the modem and that the modem has power !
